About Us

The Suffolk Historic Buildings Group was formed in 1993 to provide an opportunity for anyone with an interest in historic buildings to develop and share their knowledge with like-minded individuals.

The society has grown to a membership of approximately 400.

Membership of the group is open to everyone who is interested in our historic buildings and includes amongst others archaeologists, architects, builders, carpenters, architectural historians, conservation professionals, owners of historic buildings and interested individuals.

As a member you would receive our twice yearly publication, the Eavesdropper. The most recent are also available in the members area of the website and previous editions are available on the website with an index of authors and subjects.

Our program of activities include zoom meetings monthly through the winter on a wide range of topics related to historic buildings. At Christmas we get together for a social dinner and talk. Through the summer we organise visits to interesting buildings often in private hands inaccessible to the public. There is a small charge for these visits.

With this annual programme of visits, talks, occasional day-schools and newsletters, we aim to ‘gently educate’ existing and future owners of historic buildings in how to understand the development and evolution of their homes, how they were used, and to appreciate the need for caution when considering structural changes.
